M28 Upgrade: Night Works Begin Monday on Rochestown Road Bridge
Night works start Monday at Rochestown Road Bridge for M28 upgrade, 7:30 PM to 5:00 AM weeknights for two weeks. Significant progress across project sites.
Significant progress is being made on the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy upgrade despite persistent wet weather, with night-time investigative works set to begin at Rochestown Road Bridge from Monday, 17 November.
The M28 Project Team has provided an update on works across both the main Cork to Ringaskiddy section and the Ringaskiddy Relief Road, highlighting advances in several key areas while acknowledging weather-related delays to some earthworks activities.
From Monday, traffic management will be in place on Rochestown Road Bridge for investigative works expected to last approximately two weeks. The works will be carried out at night between 7:30 PM and 5:00 AM, Monday to Friday, both beneath the bridge on the R610 and along the existing N28. Contractors have committed to minimising noise and disturbance during these hours.

At Shannonpark, embankment construction continues on both sides of the existing road, with stream diversion works advancing at two culvert locations. A watermain diversion north of the main cut is progressing well, with Irish Water scheduled to complete the connection on Wednesday, 19 November.
Excavation for the new Maryborough to Carr's Hill link road is scheduled to begin next week, weather permitting. This will involve closure of the northbound hard shoulder within the new temporary speed limit zone. At Carr's Hill itself, excavation and filling works along the westbound verge are continuing to support preparations for the future interchange.
The temporary speed limit reduction on the N28 between Rochestown Bridge and Carr's Hill is now in effect. Traffic management on the R609, Douglas to Carrigaline Road, will commence once weather conditions permit, with flagmen controlling plant crossings during working hours.
Controlled rock blasting north of Shannonpark Roundabout continues twice weekly, with the contractor maintaining regular contact with directly affected residents. Intermittent traffic management remains in place on Board of Works Road for plant crossings, with similar arrangements to be implemented on Ballinrea Road in the coming weeks.
On the Ringaskiddy Relief Road, traffic has been switched onto the new Loughbeg Road alignment, though a single-lane arrangement will remain until the new surface is completed. Two-way traffic is scheduled for restoration by the start of December. Significant progress has been made on the mainline, with basecourse and binder layers now largely complete along the full route. Crash barrier installation is ongoing, and noise barrier works commenced this week.
At Barnahely Roundabout, two-way traffic is now operating on the western approach. The roundabout itself continues to run on the northbound lane under a one-way system, with works ongoing on the eastern and northern approaches.
Old Post Office Road works are on schedule for completion by the beginning of December, with only final surfacing remaining.
