ESB Networks Issues Christmas Electrical Safety Warning to Cork Households

ESB Networks has issued an important reminder to all electricity customers about staying safe around electricity during the festive season, with particular warnings about outdoor decorations and storm damage.

The electricity provider has urged the public never to use ESB Networks poles to hang outdoor Christmas lights, as the overhead electricity wires are live and extremely dangerous. Customers must maintain a safe distance at all times, as electricity can jump gaps.

Homeowners are advised to ensure all electrical equipment is in good condition, particularly during the winter months when storms and strong winds can cause damage to electricity wires and poles, potentially bringing live wires to the ground.

Key safety tips for indoor electrical use:

Check all electrical equipment, including Christmas lights, for signs of wear. Look for frayed wires, loose connections, damaged or cracked plugs, or discolouration. If any damage is found, disconnect immediately at the distribution board and replace the equipment.

Keep decorations and combustible materials well away from light fittings, heaters, fireplaces and candles to reduce fire risk. Switch off all electrical appliances, including Christmas lights and phone chargers, when going to bed and when leaving the house.

Extension leads should be completely unwound to avoid overheating, and sockets should not be overloaded with adaptors or extension blocks. Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly, and check that RCD (residual-current device) units work by pushing the test button.

For any electrical work, always consult a registered electrical contractor. More information is available at www.safeelectric.ie.

Outdoor electrical safety:

Always watch out for electricity wires and cables. Remember that electricity wires are always live and should never be approached. If fallen wires are spotted, keep clear and phone ESB Networks immediately.

Never attach anything to ESB Networks poles or wires, and do not work near overhead wires. Further information is available at www.esbnetworks.ie.

In any dangerous situation involving electricity wires, contact the ESB Networks emergency number: 1800 372 999 (available 24 hours, seven days a week).

ESB Networks wishes all customers a safe and happy Christmas.
