Cork County Seeks Public Input on Plan to Deliver 38,000 New Homes

Cork County Council has opened a public consultation on a proposed change to its County Development Plan, aimed at dramatically accelerating housing delivery across the county. Residents, community groups, and businesses have until 4pm on 7th April 2026 to have their say.

Proposed Variation No. 1 to the Cork County Development Plan 2022–2028 was formally agreed by elected members at a Full Council Meeting on 23rd February 2026 and is now open for public submissions. The consultation period runs from 10th March to 7th April 2026.

The proposed variation seeks to expand the supply of residentially zoned land across the county's main towns and villages, with the capacity to enable delivery of a baseline of 38,000 new homes over the next decade.

The initiative has been prepared in response to Ministerial Guidelines issued under Section 28 of the Planning and Development Act 2000, and aligns with the Government's National Planning Framework: Housing Growth Requirements.

Cllr Mary Linehan Foley, Mayor of the County of Cork, said:

The council has noted a positive pre-consultation process and extended thanks to those who submitted earlier contributions.
