West Cork Water Restrictions Begin Tonight as Summer Demand Peaks
West Cork faces overnight water cuts starting tonight: Baltimore, Schull, Ballydehob affected until Saturday morning.

Uisce Éireann has announced overnight water restrictions for six West Cork communities starting tonight, with supply cut off from 10pm to 7am daily until Saturday to cope with increased summer demand on the Abbeystrowry Reservoir.
The restrictions affect residents and businesses in Lisheens, Baltimore, Sherkin Island, Ballydehob, Schull, and Heir Island, with normal water service maintained during daytime and evening hours to support commercial operations and daily activities.
The measure comes as Cork County continues under a Water Conservation Order that remains in effect until 16 September 2025, highlighting ongoing pressure on water supplies during the traditionally drier summer months.
Michael Bell, Water Network Operations Manager, Uisce Éireann:
"These restrictions are required in order to address high water usage and to allow the supply breathing space to replenish. We are consistently monitoring the supply, and we do understand the inconvenience that the restrictions may cause, and we would like to apologise to customers and thank them for their patience."
Customers may notice water discolouration when supply resumes each morning. Uisce Éireann advises running the cold kitchen tap for up to 20 minutes to restore clarity, confirming the water remains safe to drink once clear.
The utility is urging all customers to adopt water-saving measures, noting that simple actions can significantly reduce demand. Turning off taps whilst brushing teeth or shaving saves up to six litres per minute, whilst keeping water jugs in the fridge rather than running taps can save 10 litres daily.
Garden enthusiasts are encouraged to reuse water from food preparation or washing up for plants and lawns, particularly important as many West Cork gardens are already showing signs of stress from the recent dry spell.
Vulnerable customers registered with Uisce Éireann will receive direct communications about the restrictions. The utility provides real-time updates through water.ie, their customer helpline on 1800 278 278, and their free text alert service where customers can register using their Eircode.
The timing of restrictions, whilst inconvenient for late-night activities, ensures that tourism businesses in these popular coastal destinations can operate normally during peak hours, crucial for the busy August season when visitor numbers to West Cork typically peak.
