The Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, has announced a funding package of over €1 million to support 123 Agricultural Shows nationwide. The initiative aims to bolster rural communities by ensuring these long-standing events continue to thrive.
Each show will receive a grant ranging from €4,260 to €11,410, depending on its size, assisting local organisers in preparing for the upcoming season. The latest round of funding brings the total government support for agricultural shows to over €5.3 million since 2018.
Announcing the funding at the launch of the 2025 Yearbook for the Irish Shows Association (ISA) in the Athlone Springs Hotel, Minister Calleary highlighted the cultural and economic significance of these events:
Dara Calleary, Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, said:
"Agricultural shows are a key component of life in rural Ireland, and I am delighted to announce a further investment of €1 million to support 123 shows across the country. Although farming practices have changed, agriculture remains the backbone of life in rural Ireland and plays a vital role in our national economy. These shows not only foster competition but also serve as platforms for local businesses, farmers, and artisan food producers. More than anything, they provide a fantastic opportunity for communities to come together."
The Department of Rural and Community Development will collaborate with the Irish Shows Association (ISA) to administer the 2025 scheme, ensuring the grants reach each event efficiently.
Recognising Rural Community Efforts
Minister Calleary also acknowledged the dedication of volunteers, organisers, and local businesses that contribute to the success of these shows:
"Community events like agricultural shows would not be possible without the 'Meitheal' spirit so evident in rural Ireland. I want to commend the show committees, volunteers, sponsors, and local businesses that work tirelessly to ensure these events are a success. I strongly encourage people to attend and support their local show—there truly is something for everyone."
Minister of State for Community Development, Charities and Rural Transport, Jerry Buttimer TD, added:
"Agricultural shows are a highlight of the rural calendar, offering an opportunity to engage with local farming traditions and see the best of Irish agricultural produce. The Department has been a longstanding supporter of these events, and I encourage young and old alike to experience their local show for a guaranteed great day out."
