Over 1,700 Cork Homes and Businesses Connected to High-Speed Fibre Broadband North of the City
Over 1,700 homes and businesses north of Cork City between Blarney and Watergrasshill can now connect to high-speed fibre broadband on the NBI network.
Rural areas between Blarney and Watergrasshill are now live on National Broadband Ireland's fibre network, bringing high-speed connectivity to more than 1,700 homes and businesses in the area.
National Broadband Ireland (NBI) has confirmed that 1,705 premises, including the rural surrounds of Whitechurch and Carrignavar, can now access fibre broadband under the National Broadband Plan (NBP).
The milestone brings the total number of Cork premises able to pre-order or order high-speed broadband to 62,700, with 20,600 connections made to date. Works have already been completed in rural areas across the county, including Carrigaline, Midleton, and Templemartin.
TJ Malone, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said:
"We are delighted to announce that over 1,700 Cork homes, businesses and farms between Blarney and Watergrasshill can now connect to NBI's high-speed fibre broadband. Those connected are experiencing the life-changing benefits of high-speed fibre broadband with minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second.
With the national switch-off of the copper network approaching, NBI's fibre network will ensure communities across Ireland are prepared for the future by supporting remote working, education, healthcare access, and local enterprise while providing the reliability needed for everyday living.
As we enter the final year of the National Broadband Plan rollout, we're encouraging everyone in Cork to check their Eircode on nbi.ie and order now to secure high-speed fibre broadband for their home or business."
NBI is operating under the State's Intervention Area, which covers the most remote and rural parts of Ireland where commercial operators have no plans to deliver high-speed broadband. The Intervention Area currently includes 83,000 premises in Cork, with a total Government investment of €314 million under the National Broadband Plan.
Nationally, NBI has now passed over 475,000 homes, farms and businesses, with more than 176,000 now connected. The average take-up rate of 37% is ahead of projections, surpassing 60% in areas where the network has been live longest.
As a wholesale network operator, NBI does not sell directly to consumers. Over 50 retail broadband providers are available on the NBI network. Residents can check their Eircode and place an order at nbi.ie.
