N28 Fully Closed This Weekend for M28 Bridge Installation at Maryborough Hill
N28 fully closed Rochestown to Carr's Hill from 8pm Fri 24 July to 5am Mon 27 July for M28 bridge works at Maryborough Hill. Diversions in place.
The N28 will be fully closed between Rochestown and Carr's Hill from this evening until Monday morning, as crews install a temporary bridge at Maryborough Hill under the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy motorway scheme.
The full closure runs from 8pm on Friday 24 July until 5am on Monday 27 July 2026, allowing the temporary bridge to be installed. The existing Maryborough Hill overbridge is to be demolished and replaced as part of the wider works. Maryborough Hill Bridge itself will be closed separately from 11pm on Friday 24 July until 7am on Saturday 25 July to facilitate crane operations.
The closed section of the N28 will also be used for deck works on the temporary bridge and a number of service crossings, including drainage and ducting. A signed diversion route is in place for the duration of the closure, and emergency services have been notified in advance.
Elsewhere on the route, a new traffic layout approaching the Rochestown exit at Bloomfield has been in place since 23 July, with southbound traffic shifted onto new lanes to allow retaining wall works to continue. Removal of the overhead gantry sign on the southbound carriageway towards Ringaskiddy is planned for next week and will take place at night.
Excavation for the foundations of a new structure on the south side of Rochestown Road is due to begin in the coming weeks and will affect traffic heading towards Douglas. The Rochestown off-ramp remains reduced to a single lane in the meantime.
At Mount Oval, excavation works for a new slip road continue, with flagmen in place to manage plant crossings. At Maryborough Hill, night-time service diversion works are scheduled for the western end of the site on Friday 24 July, with further works planned at the eastern end next week. Hoarding works in the Edgewood area are due to start after the August bank holiday weekend.
Along the Maryborough to Carr's Hill link road, kerbing and surfacing work is now the main focus as the project progresses. South of Carr's Hill Interchange, installation of the box culvert for the Ballybrack Cycleway is nearing completion.
On the Board of Works Road, bridge construction continues, with excavation and structural works expected to run for several months. A temporary closure of the R855/R609 Carrigaline Road to N28 on-slip is planned from 8pm on 30 July until 5am on 5 August, with flagmen and temporary traffic lights in operation along the R855 and R609 during working hours in the meantime.
In Shannonpark, work on the structure and new link road continues, with the connection to a new roundabout now under construction. Surfacing works on the new section of road towards Carrigaline, south of the new roundabout, are expected shortly ahead of the final tie-in to the existing R611.
Works also continue on the structure at Rock Road, with plant crossings ongoing at Cogan's Road. At Shanbally, machinery continues to cross the roadway at Marion Terrace during working hours. Excavation for a new overbridge at Shanbally is expected to begin shortly, with foundation works to follow in the coming weeks. Controlled blasting has also recommenced in a cutting north of the Shannonpark roundabout.
Separately, the Ringaskiddy Relief Road is expected to open to the public next week. The M28 Project Team said it will operate as a protected road, meaning pedestrians and cyclists will not be permitted to use it.
