M8 Northbound Closures Continue Between Cashel And Horse And Jockey This Week
M8 northbound closed between J7 Cashel and J6 Horse and Jockey, 8am to 6pm weekdays until 10 October. Leave the motorway at J7 and follow the R639.
Cork motorists heading for Dublin face further daytime disruption on the M8 in County Tipperary this week, with the northbound carriageway closed between Cashel and the Horse and Jockey while resurfacing works continue.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland has flagged closures on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, when the northbound M8 between Junction 7 Cashel (North) and Junction 6 Horse and Jockey will be shut from 08:00 to 18:00.
Those two days sit within a much longer programme. Tipperary County Council has made an order under Section 75 of the Roads Act 1993 closing the northbound carriageway between the same two junctions from 08:00 to 18:00 daily, Monday to Friday, running from Tuesday 4 August until Saturday 10 October 2026. Drivers should treat the closure as a possibility on any weekday between now and then, not just midweek.
Dublin-bound traffic travelling from Cork must leave the motorway at Junction 7 and follow the signed diversion along the R639, the old Cork to Dublin road, through the Horse and Jockey before rejoining the M8 at Junction 6.
The R639 is single carriageway along that stretch and carries local traffic of its own, so the detour will take considerably longer than the few minutes the motorway would. Anyone with a flight, a train connection or an appointment to make in Dublin should build in a generous buffer rather than a tight one.
The works are being carried out to resurface the motorway. Further overnight closures are planned at both junctions in early October, with Junction 6 southbound due to close from 21:00 on Monday 5 October to 05:00 on Tuesday 6 October, and Junction 7 northbound from 21:00 on Tuesday 6 October to 05:00 on Wednesday 7 October.
The M8 is Cork's principal route to the capital, so allow extra time and follow the signed diversion.
