New Book Explores Century of Michael Collins' Legacy as Clonakilty Museum Makes Publishing Debut

Michael Collins House Museum in Clonakilty will launch its first major publication this Friday, examining how "The Big Fellow" has been remembered, mythologised and politicised in the hundred years since his death at Béal na Bláth.

The book, titled "In the Shadow of the Big Fellow: The Commemoration, Commercialisation, Study, and Politicisation of Michael Collins 1922-2022", represents a significant milestone for the West Cork museum. Written by historian Cal McCarthy, who works at Michael Collins House, the publication offers what the museum describes as a "thought-provoking" analysis of Collins' enduring influence on Irish culture and politics.

McCarthy's research examines how different generations have interpreted Collins' role in Irish independence over the past century. The book analyses political discourse, public memorials, literature, film and popular culture to present what the museum calls "a nuanced portrait of a legacy still shaping national identity".

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Mary Linehan Foley:

"Michael Collins was not only a towering figure in his own time, but he has also loomed large over Irish political and cultural life ever since. This book aims to explore how different generations have interpreted his life, his role in Irish independence, and what he has come to symbolise for Ireland today."

The publication has been supported by Cork County Council's Commemoration Committee and aims to increase public understanding of Ireland's revolutionary period. The museum says the book will appeal to enthusiasts, academics and casual readers alike, continuing its mission to make this history accessible to all ages.

The official launch takes place at Michael Collins House in Clonakilty this Friday, 22 August, at 7pm. Mayor Linehan Foley will officiate at the event, with McCarthy attending for a talk and book signing. Given the significance of this being the museum's first major publication, local history enthusiasts might want to mark their calendars for what promises to be a memorable evening in Collins' hometown.

The book will be available from Friday at Michael Collins House Museum, selected bookstores, and online at www.michaelcollinshouse.ie. For a museum that combines original artefacts with interactive displays, this venture into publishing represents an important expansion of how they share the complex story of one of Cork's most famous sons.
