N28 to fully close for weekend of 24 July as temporary bridge installed at Maryborough Hill

A full weekend closure of the N28 has been confirmed for late July as part of the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Motorway scheme. The road will close between Rochestown and Carr's Hill from 8pm on Friday 24 July until 5am on Monday 27 July 2026, with diversions in place for both local traffic and HGVs.

The confirmed weekend is later than earlier indicated. A previous notice had pointed to a closure on either the weekend of 10 to 12 July or 17 to 19 July, but BAM has now confirmed the work will instead take place over the weekend of Friday 24 July.

The closure is needed to move a temporary bridge into position at Maryborough Hill. As part of the scheme, the existing overbridge at Maryborough Hill is to be demolished and replaced with a new structure.

To allow this, a temporary bridge will be put in place and traffic diverted onto it, so that Maryborough Hill Road can keep functioning with minimal disruption while the new permanent overbridge is built.

The temporary steel bridge will be assembled in a staging area next to the N28 to minimise disruption to live traffic. Once fully assembled, it will be transported into position during the planned weekend possession.

Because the lifting and installation works are close to Maryborough Hill Road, that road will also see short temporary closures during critical phases of the operation over the weekend. BAM says these closures are necessary to ensure the safety of road users and construction personnel, particularly during lifting activities.

A full traffic management and diversion plan will be in place for the duration of the closure. Emergency services will be made aware of the diversion routes, and clearly signposted diversions will operate for both local traffic and Heavy Goods Vehicles, with HGVs directed via Junction 6.

BAM has also flagged further planned weekend closures of the N28 at later stages of the project. These include the demolition of the existing bridge, scheduled for Q3 2026, and the removal of the temporary bridge in Q2 2027, once the new permanent overbridge has opened to traffic.

The advance notice has been issued to allow businesses to inform their clients, employees, subcontractors and suppliers, and to give all parties time to plan ahead. Queries can be directed to BAM Public Liaison Des Gilsenan at M28queries@bam.com or on 1800 816197.
