The N28 will be fully closed between Rochestown and Carr’s Hill from 8pm on Friday 23 October until 5am on Tuesday 27 October at the latest, while the existing Maryborough Hill Bridge is demolished. The temporary bridge alongside it will also close to motorised traffic for 18 hours on Saturday. If you’re heading anywhere over the Bank Holiday weekend, it’s worth planning your route before you set off.

The demolition is part of the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Motorway scheme. Removing the old bridge makes way for a new, larger bridge structure to replace it. The temporary bridge was installed in July and will carry traffic while the new permanent bridge is built over the coming months.

The temporary bridge was due to open to traffic, pedestrians and cyclists on Tuesday 20 October. At the same time, the existing Maryborough Hill Bridge was to close permanently so preparation works could begin ahead of the demolition.

Demolition works will start late on Friday night and continue through Saturday. For safety reasons, the temporary bridge will be closed to motorised traffic from 12am until 6pm on Saturday 24 October. During that time, the bridge will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists only. The project team said the restriction is needed to keep road users safe while demolition takes place next to the temporary bridge.

The project team said every effort will be made to complete the works as quickly as possible. The N28 will reopen earlier if it is safe to do so.

A clearly signed diversion route will be in place throughout the closure, and emergency services have been notified in advance so access is maintained at all times. HGVs will be diverted via Junction 6 on the N40. Their signposted route runs along the N27 and R600 past Cork Airport, then the R613 and R611 via Carrigaline to rejoin the N28 south of the closure. Local traffic will follow a separate signposted diversion on surrounding roads in the Douglas and Rochestown area. The diversion routes are shown on the map below.

Bus Éireann has been notified of the temporary traffic arrangements and will operate revised services during the closure. Passengers are advised to contact Bus Éireann directly for the latest route and timetable information.

There is some good news to follow the disruption. The Carr’s Hill Interchange to Maryborough Hill Link Road is due to open in the week commencing Tuesday 27 October, after the Bank Holiday, once the demolition work has been completed.

The project team acknowledged that the works may cause temporary disruption for local residents, businesses and road users.

M28 Project Team:

“We appreciate your patience and cooperation while this important phase of the project is completed and apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.”
