M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy: Works Progress Across Route as Maryborough Hill Preparations Begin

Construction works on the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy motorway project are advancing across multiple locations, with a number of new milestones and upcoming changes to traffic management expected in the weeks ahead.

Road users travelling along the existing N28 near the golf course may notice a bridge structure being assembled along the verge from next week. The M28 Project Team has confirmed this is a temporary bridge being prepared off-line, which will be transported and lifted into position at a later stage.

In the Rochestown area, retaining wall construction and road-widening works extending from the Bloomfield junction remain ongoing. Works on a retaining wall to the right-hand side of the off-ramp are due to recommence in the coming weeks following a short pause. Separately, two lanes at the Rochestown off-ramp will be reinstated from Friday evening, improving traffic flow in the area.

At the Mount Oval off-ramp, excavation works for the new slip road continue as planned, with flagmen in place to safely manage plant crossings. At Maryborough Hill, advance works are now scheduled to begin after the June Bank Holiday weekend and will include utility diversions and the removal of sections of boundary walls. Stop/go operations and temporary traffic signals will also be introduced in the area at that time to facilitate service diversion works.

Along the Maryborough to Carr's Hill link road, excavation and retaining wall construction on both sides of the N28 are ongoing and will continue for a number of months.

Night works are planned on the R609 and R855 (Carrigaline Road) on 4 June 2026 to complete a service connection. Stop/go arrangements will be in operation during these works. Traffic management remains active on both roads, east and west of the N28, where a combination of flagmen and temporary signals are used during working hours to control plant movements.

On the Board of Works Road, excavation and bridge construction works are continuing and will remain active for the foreseeable future, with intermittent traffic control measures supported by flagmen or temporary signals as required. In the Shannonpark area, progress continues on the structure and new link road, with temporary lane adjustments in place to allow completion of the south abutment. This arrangement is expected to remain for a few more weeks before traffic transitions onto the newly completed road section.

Rock excavation by means of controlled blasting has recommenced in an area of cutting to the north of the Shannonpark Roundabout.

Looking ahead, works to connect the existing L2473 (Ballinrea Road) to a new roundabout are expected to begin in the coming weeks, with flagmen present on Ballinrea Road during working hours. At Shanbally (Marion Terrace), construction traffic continues to cross the roadway during working hours, with stop/go controls in operation throughout; excavation for the overbridge is due to commence shortly.

Along the R611 (Carrigaline Road), lane realignments continue, and road users are advised to follow all signage carefully.

Surfacing works were completed at Barnahealy and the Johnson & Johnson entrance this week, with line marking and installation of road studs to follow next week. Works on the realigned boundary wall are well progressed and will continue for a number of weeks.

The ITS gantries were erected this week, with CCTV poles to follow next week. Surfacing works on the L6517 (Loughbeg Road) between the Tower Road junction and the Johnson & Johnson (DePuys) entrance were also completed this week, with relining, ramps, and bollards to be installed next week.

Minor finishing and landscaping works are continuing throughout the scheme, and the remainder of the signage will be installed in the next fortnight.
