Cork's Lord Mayor Cllr Damian Boylan has opened a book of condolence for musician Glen Hansard at the City Library, Grand Parade. Public invited to pay tribute.

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Damian Boylan, has opened and signed a book of condolences for Oscar-winning Irish musician and singer-songwriter Glen Hansard, who died suddenly on Wednesday.

The Lord Mayor signed the book at the City Library on Grand Parade, where library staff have prepared a memorial display in recognition of Mr Hansard's remarkable life and legacy. He encouraged the public to visit the library and pay tribute to Mr Hansard.

Cllr. Damian Boylan, Lord Mayor of Cork:

"The last time I saw Glen Hansard perform live was at Live at the Marquee with Eddie Vedder. It was a magical experience that I will never forget. Glen was an incredibly talented singer-songwriter and musician, who has been taken from his family far too soon. We extend our sincere condolences to his wife and child, to his family, and to his wide circle of many friends."

The City Library service said Glen Hansard's contribution to music and the arts will be remembered for generations.

The memorial display, in recognition of his life and legacy, includes a stunning photograph of Mr Hansard on stage, and features several albums by The Frames, some of his solo albums, and a DVD copy of the 2007 indie romantic musical comedy film, Once, in which Mr Hansard starred, and for which he co-wrote with Markéta Irglová the Oscar-winning song, Falling Slowly.
