Ireland's First National Safety Camera Strategy Published
Ireland has published its first National Safety Camera Strategy, expanding speed and traffic camera deployment in a new partnership between Gardaí, TII, and the NTA.
Minister of State for Road Safety, Seán Canney, has published Ireland's first National Safety Camera Strategy, setting out a new framework for the expanded deployment of speed and traffic cameras across the country's road network.
The strategy outlines a partnership model between An Garda Síochána, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), and the National Transport Authority (NTA). Under the new approach, TII will take responsibility for the management of fixed and average speed cameras, with An Garda Síochána retaining enforcement powers for camera-detected speed offences. The NTA will assume primary responsibility, covering both management and enforcement, for urban traffic management offences.
Minister Canney said:
"I am pleased to publish Ireland's first National Safety Camera Strategy, which puts in place a framework through which we can expand the use of safety cameras across our road network. Tragically, we have seen an increase in serious injuries and fatalities on our roads in recent years. The use of safety cameras has been proven to reduce speeding and improve driver behaviour, and I am confident that safety cameras can help us achieve our Road Safety targets including working towards Vision Zero."
The strategy aligns with Programme for Government commitments to expand camera coverage and delivers on part one of Action 6 of the Government's Road Safety Strategy Phase 2 Action Plan.
A Camera Enforcement Oversight Group will be established to oversee implementation of the strategy, with membership drawn from An Garda Síochána, the NTA, TII, the RSA, the Courts Service, and the local authority sector. The group will coordinate agency activities, collate and report on performance data, and engage with the Departments of Transport and Justice on legislative and funding matters.
Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan welcomed the publication, saying:
"I welcome the publication of Ireland's first National Safety Camera Strategy and the strong emphasis it places on partnership between agencies. Effective enforcement is a key pillar of road safety, and this Strategy provides a clear framework to strengthen the use of safety cameras in a way that is targeted, evidence-led and proportionate."
