An Garda Síochána has issued a public statement calling on those involved in ongoing fuel protests to engage with local Gardaí and facilitate emergency services, public transport, and diversion routes.

The protests, which began yesterday, have been described as peaceful but are causing significant disruption in parts of the country. Gardaí say they have received reports of emergency workers being delayed or prevented from reaching their workplaces, and of people unable to attend hospital appointments or visit ill relatives.

Key public transport routes are also reported to be delayed or not operating, with knock-on impacts for employees and businesses. A small number of fuel depots are also being blocked, and Gardaí say diversion routes put in place to ease travel around protests are themselves being obstructed.

An Garda Síochána has stated that while it respects and facilitates the right to peaceful protest, it must also balance and protect individuals' right to travel freely and the right of commercial organisations to conduct business.

Gardaí have emphasised that there is no permit required to organise a protest, and that An Garda Síochána has no role in permitting or authorising public gatherings. The force says any Garda activity in relation to evolving events will involve a graduated policing response, taking into account relevant legislation and public safety.

Gardaí have said they will continue to provide updates to the public through their social media channels where possible.
