Dunnes Stores Recalls Batch of Potato Waffles Over Elevated Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbon Levels

Dunnes Stores is recalling a batch of its Potato Waffles (680g) due to elevated levels of mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH). The affected batch has a best before date of July 2028.

The recall has been classified as Category 1: For Action. Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale in Dunnes stores.

Mineral oil hydrocarbons are a wide range of chemical compounds derived mainly from petroleum distillation and refining. They are divided into two main groups: mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons. They can enter food through several routes, including environmental contamination, lubricants used on machinery during harvesting and food production, processing aids, food or feed additives, and migration from food contact materials.

Some substances within the mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons group are of possible health concern. Consuming the affected product does not pose an immediate risk to health, but continuous consumption over a long period may pose a potential risk. Exposure to mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons therefore needs to be minimised.

Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated batch.
