Cork County Launches Bike Week 2025 with Over 300 Events Planned

Cork County is gearing up for Bike Week 2025, a celebration of cycling that will feature more than 315 events across the region. The festival, running from Saturday, 10th May to Sunday, 18th May, aims to promote the benefits of cycling to people of all ages and abilities.

Cork County Mayor, Councillor Joe Carroll, officially launched the event, expressing enthusiasm for the wide range of activities planned.

"It is fantastic to see so many free and fun events organised to promote cycling across the County," said Mayor Carroll. "Many of the events have been organised to appeal to younger generations and to highlight the benefits of cycling as a mode of transport."

James Kirby from Cork Sports Partnership highlighted the collaborative effort behind the initiative, which involves partnerships between Cork Sports Partnership, Cork County Council, Cork City Council, and numerous other stakeholders. The programme includes family fun cycles, leisure rides, workshops, challenges, and scenic tours throughout Cork County.

Last year's event attracted over 18,000 participants, and organisers are hoping for even greater engagement in 2025. Activities will take place in schools, clubs, workplaces, youth services, disability services, and community spaces.

Cork County Council Chief Executive, Moira Murrell, noted that the Safe Routes to School Schemes have been instrumental in increasing cycling among younger generations. The Council has delivered nine such schemes to date, with plans to implement 17 more this summer, including projects in Skibbereen and Macroom.

These schemes aim to enhance safety at school gates and encourage pupils to walk, cycle, or scoot to school in secure environments. Schools involved in the Safe Routes initiative are also participating in Bike Week events.

Cork County Council has organised several special activities, including cycling challenges in primary schools, a 'try a bike' event for Carrigtwohill Business & Technology Park, and a cycle to school event with Mary Geary's Childcare in Carrigtwohill, building on last year's success.
