Cork City Libraries Lead the Way With JAM Card Training
Cork City Libraries are now fully JAM Friendly after completing Just A Minute training, with the initiative set to roll out across all City Council departments.
Cork City Libraries have become the first service within Cork City Council to complete 'Just A Minute' (JAM) training, as the local authority begins rolling out the inclusion-focused initiative across all of its departments.
The JAM training programme is designed to make everyday interactions easier and more supportive for people with hidden disabilities, communication challenges, or additional needs. Library staff across the city's branch network are now fully JAM Friendly, ensuring services are more accessible and responsive to the diverse needs of the public.
JAM Card users can show their physical card or use the associated app to let staff know they may need a moment of patience or additional support, without the need to explain their condition.
The training has equipped library staff with practical guidance on clear, respectful, and inclusive communication, encouraging them to pause and give individuals extra time without rushing or making assumptions.
David O'Brien, Cork City Librarian, welcomed the completion of the programme:
"Here at the City Library, working with our colleagues in City Council, we are really pleased to be the first in council to complete the training and embrace the concept of 'Just A Minute' for those who need the facility. It is a really good thing that the JAM initiative is being rolled out across the services of Cork City Council. It's totally discrete and inclusive and I very much welcome it."
The JAM Card is used by over 75,000 people across Ireland and the UK, supporting individuals with conditions including autism, learning difficulties, memory issues, and other hidden disabilities. Developed by the NOW Group, a Belfast-based social enterprise, the card provides a simple, discreet, and non-verbal way for people to request understanding and support during everyday interactions.
Staff across all Cork City Council departments, including the Senior Management Team, will receive JAM training over the coming months, as the local authority works to embed accessibility at the core of its public services.
