Cork City Council Warns of Localised Surface Flooding on City Centre Quays on Tuesday

Cork City Council is predicting localised surface flooding at high tide on Tuesday, 29 September, on a number of low-lying city centre quays.

High tides coinciding with a tidal storm surge may result in surface water accumulation in low-lying areas, including:

• Wandesford Quay
• Lavitt's Quay
• Union Quay
• Kyrl's Quay
• South Terrace.

The Council says this is not a fluvial flooding event and is primarily a tidal occurrence. Pedestrians and motorists are advised to exercise caution, avoid parking on affected quays, and allow extra time for travel, as traffic delays may occur in the city centre.

Cork City Council advises householders and businesses to take precautionary measures to protect their properties during this period of high tides. The Council is closely monitoring the situation and will have crews on standby to respond as required.

No road closures are currently expected. However, temporary lane restrictions may be put in place in certain areas at certain times.

Separately, two yellow weather warnings have been issued for Cork and other Munster counties, covering very strong and gusty southeasterly winds and spells of heavy rain. Both have an expected onset of 13:00 on Tuesday 29 September 2026 and expire at 21:00 the same day. Both were issued at 09:45 on Monday 28 September 2026.

The wind warning lists potential impacts including wave overtopping and flooding on coasts, due to a combination of Spring tides, surge and very strong onshore winds. Difficult travelling conditions, some fallen trees and branches, and debris and loose objects being displaced are also listed.
