ComReg Urges Vigilance on Scam Calls & Texts as Humm Warns of Phone Scam Targeting Passcodes

The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) has issued fresh guidance urging the public to stay vigilant against scam calls and texts, while humm has separately warned its customers about a phone scam targeting one-time passcodes.

In an update published on 27 May 2026, ComReg said scam calls and texts are unsolicited communications aimed at misleading people into sharing personal or financial information. The regulator is working with the telecommunications industry to help combat these scams but said it remains important for the public to stay vigilant.

ComReg's advice is summarised in the acronym SCAM. Stop for a moment and don't rush to respond to urgent calls or texts; hang up if pressured. Check if you recognise the number, and look for spelling errors or mistakes in texts. Avoidanswering calls or clicking links, and verify numbers through official contacts. Mark persistent or suspicious numbers as spam, and block them.

ComReg's scam calls and texts advice page also provides information on how to identify and avoid scams, what to do if you fall for a scam, why you might be getting so many scam calls and texts lately, how the scammers got your number, and examples of scam calls and texts.

Around the same time, humm issued a separate alert to its customers. The company said it has been made aware of scam attempts being carried out against humm customers, with reports of an individual calling a customer's mobile phone, claiming to be from humm, and requesting a 6-digit one time passcode (OTP) that had been sent to the customer by SMS.

humm:

"humm will never ask you to share an OTP or password over the phone. If someone calls claiming to be from humm and asks for this information, do not provide it. Hang up and contact humm directly at contactus@shophumm.comor through our website www.shophumm.com/ie Never share your login details or security codes with anyone."

humm added that any customer who has received such a call and provided the OTP over the phone should get in touch with the company at contactus@shophumm.com.
