Capwell Marks 100 Years with Community Street Celebration

One of Cork city's earliest social housing schemes is set to mark a landmark century this weekend, as the Capwell community in Turners Cross prepares to celebrate 100 years since the development of one of the Irish Free State's most significant public housing projects.

The community-led celebration, titled Capwell 100, takes place on Sunday, 24 May 2026, from 2p.m. to 4p.m., with Capwell Road being transformed into a pedestrian-friendly space for an afternoon of music, games, history, food and family activities.

Originally established in 1926, the Capwell housing scheme was a pioneering step toward modern, high-quality public housing in Cork city. Organisers have designed the event to welcome current and former residents, extended families, neighbours and the wider Cork community.

The Capwell 100 organising committee said:

"This celebration is about recognising the unique history of Capwell while also celebrating the strong sense of community in the Turners Cross and wider City area that still exists today. We want people of all ages to come together, share stories, reconnect with neighbours and enjoy a memorable day on the street."

The event forms part of Cork City Council's Open Streets programme, which encourages communities to reclaim public spaces for social and cultural activities. Planned activities include live music, local bands, games and a special local history exhibition marking the centenary. The event is entirely community-run, made possible through the support of local residents, businesses and Cork City Council.
