Cahirmee Horse Fair: Garda Diversions in Place at Buttevant, Road Closures Resume 7am Monday
Road closures are in place in Buttevant from 7am for the Cahirmee Horse Fair. Traffic is diverted via Doneraile. Follow Garda signs, not satnav.
An Garda Síochána has confirmed that the fair is running across both Sunday 12 and Monday 13 July 2026, correcting reports that had it taking place on Monday alone. Motorists have been told to expect delays.
Traffic diversions are in place in Buttevant for the Cahirmee Horse Fair. Gardaí have said the diversions operating on Sunday 12 July will remain until late that evening, with road closures then recommencing from 7am on Monday 13 July and staying in place until the fair has concluded. No finishing time has been given for Monday.
Traffic is being diverted at New Twopothouse via Doneraile, and at Lisballyhea via Doneraile. Both points sit on the N20 either side of Buttevant. In 2022 and again in 2024, Gardaí routed northbound traffic off the N20 at New Twopothouse and southbound traffic at Lisballyhea, with both diversions running via Doneraile.
Gardaí have asked motorists travelling through the area to expect delays and to follow the diversion routes in place.
An Garda Síochána said:
"Please follow Garda diversion signs and the directions of Gardaí on duty rather than relying on satellite navigation systems, as these may not reflect the temporary traffic management measures in place."
The fair traditionally falls on 12 July, which in 2026 is a Sunday. As The Echo has reported, it has no official organiser, which is why the date and the traffic arrangements become a source of confusion most years.
Buttevant Post Office is closed on Monday 13 July because of the fair, according to 96FM, with payments due that day paid out in advance on Saturday 11 July.
Drivers using the N20 between Mallow and Charleville should allow extra time on both days, or consider an alternative route.
