An Garda Síochána Seeks Public Views on Drone and Aerial Recording Devices
An Garda Síochána is seeking public feedback on a draft Code of Practice for aerial recording devices, including drones. Submissions close 31 March 2026.
An Garda Síochána has launched a public consultation today, Tuesday 3 March 2026, on a draft Code of Practice governing the use of recording devices mounted on aerial platforms, including drones, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft.
The consultation follows requirements set out in the Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) Act 2023, which provides the legal framework for the use of such technology. Part 8 of the Act specifically requires a Code of Practice to be established for aerial recording devices.
The draft Code aims to clarify how these devices will be operated and to ensure they are used only for the principal purposes defined under the 2023 Act, including the prevention, investigation, detection, and prosecution of criminal offences.
Members of the public are now invited to submit their feedback on the draft. Engagement with relevant Government departments will also take place alongside the public consultation.
Acting Deputy Commissioner, Security, Strategy and Governance, Paul Cleary said:
"An Garda Síochána is committed to deploying the latest technologies to keep our communities safe. Modern technologies are required to face modern threats. Serious offences and public disorder can occur dynamically. The deployment of this technology will support An Garda Síochána in meeting these new and emerging challenges. An Garda Síochána welcomes the views of the public who we serve. The public's views on how these recording devices are deployed and operated will help An Garda Síochána to continue to provide a community-focused policing service."
The draft Code of Practice and submission form are available on the Garda website. Feedback must be submitted no later than Tuesday 31 March 2026.
