Witness Appeal: Fatal Collision Closes M8 Motorway Near Mitchelstown

A 40-year-old man has been fatally injured following a collision between a car and pedestrian on the M8 motorway near Mitchelstown last night, with the northbound carriageway remaining closed this morning as Gardaí continue their investigation.
The fatal incident occurred at approximately 9:15pm on Saturday evening between junctions 11 and 12 northbound at Carrigane, Mitchelstown. The collision involved a car and a male pedestrian, who was fatally injured as a result of the collision.
The victim's body has been removed to Cork University Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course. The male driver of the vehicle, aged in his 20s, was uninjured in the collision.
The M8 northbound carriageway between junctions 11 and 12 remains closed pending a technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Diversions have been put in place, and motorists travelling between Cork and Dublin are advised to expect significant delays.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward. They are also seeking road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, who were travelling in the area at the time of the collision to make this footage available to Gardaí.
