Whitegate Village to Benefit from €107,000 Flood Study Funding
Over €107,000 approved for Whitegate Village flood study as Cork County Council secures OPW funding to assess risk and protection measures.
Cork County Council has secured funding of over €107,000 to investigate flood risks in Whitegate Village, with the money set to pay for expert surveys and recommendations on how to protect local properties.
Minister Kevin "Boxer" Moran has approved the council's application under the Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme. The €107,708 allocation will fund the procurement of an engineering consultant to conduct surveys and a study, with the aim of recommending measures to reduce flood risk to properties in the village.
The OPW scheme, which has been running since 2009, provides funding to local authorities to tackle localised flooding and coastal protection issues. Projects costing up to €750,000 can apply, with the OPW covering up to 90% of approved costs.
Cork County Council has been a frequent beneficiary of the scheme, with 65 funding applications supported since its introduction.
Any works arising from the study's recommendations will be a matter for the council to progress. Local authorities must be satisfied that any works will not have a significant impact on flood risk elsewhere.
Further details on the scheme, including annual lists of approved projects, are available on the OPW's Minor Works page.
