Cork faces a day of persistent wet and windy weather today with widespread rain clearing this afternoon, followed by scattered showers and strengthening winds along the coast tonight.

A weather system brought widespread rain across Cork this morning, with conditions set to improve from early afternoon as sunny spells develop between scattered showers. Met Éireann reports the rain is already beginning to clear from western areas.

Today's temperatures will reach 16 to 18 degrees despite the unsettled conditions. Fresh and gusty southeasterly winds are veering southwesterly as the main rain band moves through, with wind speeds easing to strong by afternoon.

The morning's heavy rainfall is giving way to brighter conditions, though scattered showers will continue throughout the day. Some of these showers may be heavy at times, but the persistent morning rain is expected to clear completely from early afternoon.

Relief from the wet conditions will be temporary. Tonight will see a return to wet and windy weather with widespread showers developing, some heavy at times. Temperatures will drop to between 10 and 12 degrees overnight.

Atlantic coastal areas should expect the strongest conditions tonight, with fresh to strong west to southwest winds reaching near gale or gale force strength along exposed coastlines. These gusty conditions will persist through the night.

Tomorrow, Monday, will see scattered showers gradually easing and becoming more isolated towards the afternoon. Brighter spells are expected to develop as conditions improve, with temperatures ranging from 13 to 16 degrees.

Westerly winds will remain moderate tomorrow, though they may still reach strong or near gale force at times along Atlantic coastal areas. The unsettled pattern suggests Cork residents should continue to expect changeable conditions into the new week.

Motorists should exercise caution on roads today, particularly during shower activity when visibility may be reduced. Coastal areas should be prepared for gusty conditions tonight, with loose outdoor items requiring securing before the stronger winds develop.

The Solar UV Index remains low to moderate despite the cloudy conditions and intermittent sunshine expected this afternoon.
