Westcourt Pedestrian Crossing Now in the Pipeline with NTA Funding
Public consultation on a pedestrian crossing at Westcourt, Ballincollig (near the Regional Park) opens at 09:00 today, and closes at 17:00 on 13 November.
A pedestrian crossing at Westcourt in Ballincollig, heading towards Ballincollig Regional Park, is now in the pipeline, according to Cllr Joe Lynch. The Sinn Féin councillor for Cork City’s South-West ward says a design is in hand and funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA) is in place.
The scheme forms part of Cork City Council’s Proposed Pedestrian Crossing Safety Schemes Batch 2b public consultation, which opens at 09:00 on Friday 16 October 2026. Submissions close at 17:00 on Friday 13 November 2026.
One of Cllr Lynch’s first motions to Cork City Council, submitted in 2024, called for a pedestrian crossing to be installed at Westcourt. He says numerous motions and questions have been submitted on the matter since.
A motion from Cllr Lynch, reference 24/607, appeared on the agenda for the Cork City Council ordinary meeting on Monday 9 December 2024. It reads:
“That Cork City Council undertake to improve pedestrian facilities on the Inniscarra Road (L2211-0), providing a safe crossing point from Westcourt Estate to the footpath opposite linking to Ballincollig Regional Park.” The agenda listed the motion for the South West Local Area Committee meeting on 27 January 2025.
A design drawing shared with Cllr Lynch’s Facebook post shows a proposed signalised pedestrian crossing on the Inniscarra Road, a proposed zebra crossing and a proposed pedestrian fence.
Cllr Joe Lynch, Sinn Féin, Cork City South-West:
“One of my first motions submitted to Cork City Council - back in 2024 - was to call for a pedestrian crossing to be installed at Westcourt, heading towards the Regional Park; with numerous motions and questions submitted on the matter since.
These things take time to convert into results, but I am delighted to report that this is now finally in the pipeline, with a design in hand and funding from the NTA in place”
The Inniscarra Road leads from the roundabout at the west end of Ballincollig to Inniscarra Bridge, passing the entrance to the western end of the Regional Park, where there is car parking and access to the walks and playing fields. Anyone who has stood at the kerb with a buggy or a dog on a lead, waiting for a gap in the traffic, will be glad to see the plans on paper.
