Water Quality Works Begin in Ballintemple This Week

Uisce Éireann crews will commence targeted flushing works in the Janeville and Lindville areas of Ballintemple from tomorrow, continuing the utility's ongoing programme to improve water quality and address discolouration across Cork City.

The planned works will take place over two days, running from 8am to 5pm on Wednesday, 05 November and Thursday, 06 November. The flushing programme forms part of Uisce Éireann's network improvement plan, with operations targeted based on customer reports of water discolouration.

Residents in the affected areas can expect to see signage in place as crews carry out the intensive flushing works. Customers are advised to check the supply and services section at water.ie for updates throughout the works.

James Goulding, Uisce Éireann's Operations Manager:

"Tomorrow, our crews will carry out intensive flushing works in the Janeville and Lindville areas in Ballintemple. These works are part of Uisce Éireann's targeted flushing programme. We continue to strongly encourage customers to report any instances of discolouration as they occur. Every report is investigated by our expert teams, and these planned flushing works are targeted based on this information."

Water discolouration typically occurs when sediment, including naturally occurring metals such as manganese and iron, becomes dislodged from old cast iron pipes or during network maintenance. Should discolouration occur, Uisce Éireann recommends running the cold kitchen tap for up to 20 minutes, which usually restores the water to a clear colour. The water remains safe to drink once running clear.

If the issue persists, customers should contact Uisce Éireann's customer care team on 1800 278 278 or report it via the dedicated online form at water.ie/cork for prompt investigation and response.

The Ballintemple works represent the latest phase of an extensive city-wide programme. In 2024, Uisce Éireann carried out targeted flushing in seven different District Metering Areas across Cork. This year's programme has already seen works completed in Blackpool, Old Youghal Road, Mayfield, Silversprings, Blackrock Road, Shanakiel, College Road, Greenmount and Deerpark.

More information on manganese and iron in drinking water is available from the HSE, with further advice on discoloured water at water.ie/help/water-quality/discoloured-water.

Uisce Éireann has thanked customers for their patience as the utility continues working to reduce instances of discolouration across Cork City.
