Water Quality Improvement Works Begin Tomorrow in Shanakiel
Uisce Éireann crews begin two-day water quality improvement works in Shanakiel tomorrow, targeting discolouration issues on Shanakiel Road and Ashboro.

Uisce Éireann crews will start targeted flushing works in the Shanakiel area tomorrow morning as part of an ongoing programme to tackle water discolouration issues affecting homes and businesses across Cork City.
The proactive flushing programme will commence at 10:00am on Wednesday, 3 September, and continue until 4:00pm on Thursday, 4 September. The works are designed to improve water quality by addressing sediment build-up in the network that causes discolouration.
Two specific areas will be targeted during this phase: Shanakiel Road and Ashboro. Residents and businesses in these locations should expect to see work crews and signage throughout the two-day operation.
James Goulding, Water Operations Lead for Uisce Éireann, said:
"We are moving into the Shanakiel area to carry out proactive flushing works. These works are an integral part of the improvement works underway to address reports of discolouration. We would like to thank our customers for their continued patience while our crews work through the programme plan."
The flushing programme represents a systematic approach to tackling water quality issues that have affected various parts of Cork City. In 2024, Uisce Éireann carried out targeted flushing in seven different District Metering Areas, with 2025 seeing an expanded programme covering Blackpool, Old Youghal Road, Mayfield, Silversprings, and Blackrock Road areas.
Water discolouration typically occurs when sediment, including naturally occurring metals such as manganese and iron, becomes dislodged from older cast iron pipes. While the discoloured water may look unappetising, it remains safe to drink once it runs clear.
Residents experiencing discolouration should run their cold kitchen tap for up to 20 minutes, which usually restores the water to its normal clear colour. If problems persist, customers can contact Uisce Éireann's customer care team on 1800 278 278 or report issues through the dedicated online form at water.ie.
The utility company advises customers to check the supply and services section of water.ie for updates and additional information about the works. Detailed information about manganese and iron in drinking water is available through HSE guidance documents linked on the Uisce Éireann website.
Cork City residents should note that the Water Conservation Order, which restricts hosepipe use in Cork County until 16 September, does not apply to Cork City customers.
