Cork University Hospital has introduced visitor restrictions following a Norovirus outbreak affecting two wards, with other wards currently under observation.

HSE South West is appealing to the public not to visit CUH, or any other facility, if they are experiencing symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting, in order to limit the spread of the highly contagious virus and to protect vulnerable patients.

Under the current restrictions, only one visitor is permitted per patient. Visiting hours are strictly limited to 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm, and all visitors must use the alcohol hand gel provided when entering and leaving the hospital.

Infection control procedures are in place on the affected wards and will remain until further notice. The restrictions will be lifted as soon as clinical circumstances allow.

Jennifer Kearney, Chief Executive Officer of CUH, said:

"We are introducing these visitor restrictions in light of the increasing cases of Norovirus circulating at CUH. This is an unpleasant virus which can spread quickly and easily, so we are taking these measures within the hospital to keep patients safe.

The one-visitor restriction is vital to avoid spreading the virus to patients, visitors and staff. Anyone with symptoms of diarrhoea and/or vomiting should not visit the hospital. CUH would like to thank the public for their co-operation at this time."

Norovirus, commonly known as the winter vomiting bug, causes diarrhoea and vomiting and is one of the most common stomach bugs in Ireland. While it is more prevalent in winter, it can be caught at any time of year.
