Video: Garda Operation Under Way at Whitegate Refinery to Secure Emergency Fuel Supplies

Latest 2:23 pm:

A significant security operation is currently underway in East Cork as An Garda Síochána and the Irish Defence Forces move to end the five-day blockade at the Whitegate oil refinery. Following the declaration of a "National Exceptional Event" by the Garda Commissioner, tactical units arrived in Whitegate this morning (Saturday, 11 April 2026) to restore access to Ireland's only oil refinery.

The video in the embedded tweet below captures the scale of the deployment, featuring Defence Forces heavy-lift recovery vehicles specifically designed for clearing heavy obstructions - working alongside the Garda Public Order Unit. These measures were taken after fuel shortages began impacting over 600 forecourts nationwide and threatened the operations of the National Ambulance Service and regional fire services.

Gardaí have issued formal directions to protesters to "cease and desist," with reports of pepper spray being used as officers moved to clear tractors and HGVs from the primary access routes. While the village of Whitegate has been largely cleared of obstructions, a heavy security presence remains as authorities work to escort fuel tankers through to the N25 and ensure the restoration of the national fuel supply chain.

Gardaí and Army units remain on high alert as the national fuel emergency continues.

An Garda Síochána say a "Garda Operation is ongoing at Whitegate Refinery."

The Garda Public Order Units have been deployed, and Gardaí are asking the public to comply with Garda directions.

Fuel trucks have entered the Whitegate Oil Refinery under Garda escort following a major operation at the site this morning and afternoon.

The Journal's reporter Niall O'Connor, who is on the ground at Whitegate, reported that seven trucks arrived after the Garda operation. According to Cork Beo, eight fuel trucks have entered the refinery under Garda escort.

Gardaí had earlier confirmed that Public Order Units were deployed at the site to ensure critical fuel supplies could reach emergency services, including the National Ambulance Service and fire services.

The refinery, Ireland's only oil refinery, has been the focal point of the nationwide fuel protests since Wednesday 8 April. Fuel supply from the site had been severely restricted, contributing to approximately 500 forecourts running dry across the country.

An Garda Síochána has confirmed that a Garda operation is under way at Whitegate Refinery to ensure critical supplies of fuel can reach emergency services, including the National Ambulance Service and fire services.

Gardaí confirmed that Public Order Units have been deployed at the site and that those involved in the ongoing protest must comply with Garda directions.

The operation comes as emergency services across the country face increasing pressure on fuel supplies, with fire services having restricted operations to non-life-threatening callouts and the National Ambulance Service curtailing routine transfers in order to preserve fuel.

Whitegate Refinery, Ireland's only oil refinery, supplies approximately one third of the country's fuel and has been the focal point of the nationwide fuel protests since Wednesday 8 April.

This is a developing story. Cork Safety Alerts will provide further updates as the situation progresses.
