Urgent Recall of SMA Infant Formula Products Due to Possible Presence of Harmful Toxin
Parents advised not to use affected products.
Update - 7 January 2026
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has updated this recall to include an additional batch of SMA Alfamino infant formula and to correct expiry date information.
Batch 51700017Y1 (expiry June 2027) has been added to the recall. The expiry date for batch 51210017Y1 has been corrected to May 2027, not January 2027 as originally stated.
Both batches of SMA Alfamino 400g infant formula should not be fed to infants or young children due to the possible presence of cereulide toxin.
To date, there have been no confirmed reports of illness associated with consumption of the affected products.
Nestlé is recalling multiple batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula products due to the possible presence of cereulide, a toxin that can cause severe vomiting in infants. Parents, guardians and caregivers are advised not to feed the implicated batches to infants or young children.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued a Category 1 (For Action) alert today, Monday, 05 January 2026, warning that the affected products may contain cereulide toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus.
Cereulide toxin is extremely heat-resistant and may be pre-formed in food. Consumption of foods containing the toxin can lead to nausea and severe vomiting, with symptoms appearing within five hours. The duration of illness is usually between six and 24 hours.
