Restoration of Historic Skibbereen Mural Completed
Skibbereen's iconic "Baby Hannah's Mural" restored to former glory after 30 years, thanks to community and council partnership.
A beloved piece of West Cork's cultural heritage has been given a new lease of life following the successful restoration of the iconic "Baby Hannah's Mural" in Skibbereen.
The refurbishment of the artwork, which depicts the poignant departure of the last train from Skibbereen, was carried out by renowned German muralist Claudia Koch under the supervision of the Skibbereen & District Historical Society.
Originally created in 1994 by local artist Russell Barrett, the mural symbolises the closure of the town's railway line and has stood as a powerful tribute to local history for more than three decades. The artwork remains deeply cherished by residents and visitors alike.
The project was supported by Cork County Council through its Heritage Grant Scheme and Arts Programme, together with funding from the Heritage Council's Community Heritage Grant Scheme.
Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Mary Linehan Foley:
"This completed project shows the impact of public art on people and the effectiveness of a collaborative partnership approach in preserving our heritage. This project means that this mural can be enjoyed for years to come."
The successful completion of the restoration ensures this significant piece of public art will be preserved for generations to come, highlighting an ongoing commitment to celebrating West Cork's rich cultural tradition.
