Uisce Éireann to Begin Night-Time Water Flushing Works in Greenmount Area

Uisce Éireann will carry out targeted water flushing works in the Greenmount area of Cork City from Monday, 20 October, as part of its ongoing programme to improve water quality and address discolouration issues across the city.

The works will take place over four consecutive nights between 10pm and 4am, starting on Monday and continuing through the week. The night-time schedule is designed to minimise disruption to homes and businesses in the area.

Twelve locations will be affected by the flushing programme, including Lough Road (from Bandon Road to Valentine Villas), Lough Villas, Waterville, Valentine Villas, Gould Street, Croghtamore Gardens, Green Street, Rose Lawn, Greenmount Crescent, Greenmount Buildings, Greenmount Avenue, and Greenmount Place.

James Goulding, Water Operations Lead for Uisce Éireann, said:

"Our crews are heading to the Greenmount area of the city next week to carry out proactive flushing works. These works are one of our key measures that we undertake to address reports of discolouration. We thank customers in homes and businesses in the area for their continued patience while our crews work through the programmed plan and we encourage customers in the city to continue to report instances of discolouration."

The flushing programme is part of Uisce Éireann's broader network improvement plan for Cork City. In 2024, the utility carried out targeted flushing in seven different District Metering Areas. This year, works have already been completed in Blackpool, Old Youghal Road, Mayfield, Silversprings, Blackrock Road, Shanakiel, and College Road areas.

Water discolouration typically occurs when sediment, including naturally occurring metals such as manganese and iron, becomes dislodged from older cast iron pipes. The utility stresses that the water remains safe to drink once it runs clear.

Customers experiencing discolouration are advised to run their cold kitchen tap for up to 20 minutes, which usually restores the water to a clear colour. If the issue persists, residents should contact Uisce Éireann's customer care team on 1800 278 278 or report it via the dedicated online form at water.ie/cork.

Signage will be placed in the area as works progress. Customers can check for updates in the supply and services section of www.water.ie.
