Uisce Éireann to Begin Next Phase of Water Quality Flushing Works in Blackrock Road Area

Uisce Éireann will commence the next round of targeted water network flushing on Monday, 7 July 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to improve water quality for Cork City residents and businesses. The four-night programme will focus on areas around Blackrock Road, continuing the utility company's proactive approach to addressing water discolouration issues across the city.

The evening works will cover several key areas including Victoria Avenue (from Victoria Road to Old Blackrock Road), sections of Blackrock Road, Marina Park, Victoria Road (from Monahan Road to Blackrock Road), Bull's Lane, and Dun Raven Downs. The flushing programme forms part of Uisce Éireann's broader network improvement plan designed to tackle persistent water quality concerns in Cork City.

To minimise disruption to residents, the works will be carried out during off-peak hours, typically beginning after 10pm and concluding in the early hours of the morning. This scheduling allows the network sufficient time to return to normal operation before morning demand peaks, reducing the likelihood of discoloured water reaching customers' taps.

James Goulding, Water Operations Lead for Uisce Éireann, said:

"Addressing areas experiencing discoloration in the city remains a key priority, as our crews move steadily through the flushing programme in the Blackrock Road area. We will continue to move through this area of the city as efficiently and quickly as possible. Despite the positive progress we are making, we are still asking customers to continue to report any instances of discolouration they may experience."

Residents may notice signage being installed as the works progress through the area. Customers are also advised to monitor the supply and services section of the Uisce Éireann website at www.water.ie for updates and information.

Water discolouration typically occurs when sediment, including naturally occurring metals such as manganese and iron, becomes dislodged from older cast iron pipes or during network maintenance activities. Should residents experience discoloured water, Uisce Éireann recommends running the cold kitchen tap for up to 20 minutes, which usually restores the water to a clear colour. The water remains safe to drink once it runs clear.

Customers experiencing persistent discolouration issues are encouraged to contact Uisce Éireann directly on 1800 278 278. Additional information about water quality and discolouration is available at www.water.ie/help/water-quality/discoloured-water/.

This latest phase follows successful flushing programmes completed earlier in 2025 in other Cork City areas, including Blackpool, Old Youghal Road, Mayfield, and Silversprings. In 2024, Uisce Éireann carried out targeted flushing across seven different District Metering Areas throughout the city.
