Two Arrested in Connection with Fatal Cork City Assault

Gardaí investigating the fatal assault of a woman on St. Patrick's Street last December have arrested two people in their 30s. The man and woman were detained yesterday but have since been released without charge as investigations continue.
The arrest marks a significant development in the investigation into the death of a woman in her 30s who was fatally assaulted on St. Patrick's Street, Cork city, on the evening of Sunday, 1st December 2024. The case has remained under active investigation by Gardaí at Anglesea Street for the past eight months.
Yesterday, Wednesday 30th July 2025, detectives arrested a man and woman, both aged in their 30s, in connection with the fatal assault. The pair were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, which allows Gardaí to hold suspects for up to 24 hours for questioning about serious offences.
Both individuals were brought to a Garda station in Cork for questioning. However, following their period of detention, they were released without charge. This is a standard procedure in complex investigations where further evidence may need to be gathered before charges can be brought.
A file on the case is now being prepared for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who will ultimately decide whether criminal charges should be brought against any individuals in connection with the woman's death. This process can take several months as investigators compile all evidence and witness statements.
