As Leaving Certificate results arrive tomorrow, national mental health charity Turn2Me is reminding students and parents that multiple pathways lead to success, with the charity offering free counselling support for those feeling overwhelmed.

The charity has outlined five practical alternatives for students who may not achieve their expected points, emphasising that no single exam determines a person's future potential or worth.

Fiona O'Malley, CEO of Turn2Me:

"There are so many routes into fulfilling careers and opportunities, and no single exam defines your worth, your intelligence, or your potential. We would encourage parents to be supportive, positive, and open-minded about the choices ahead."

The charity's first recommendation involves considering conversion courses. Students can complete alternative degrees before entering their preferred field: a science degree can lead to graduate-entry medicine, whilst an arts degree can provide a pathway into law. Universities across Ireland offer numerous conversion opportunities that create alternative routes to the same career destinations.

Apprenticeships and trades represent another valuable option. These programmes combine hands-on experience with earning a salary, and many trades command excellent wages in today's economy. From traditional electrical and plumbing work to emerging tech apprenticeships, these routes offer strong career prospects without the traditional points competition.

Post-Leaving Certificate courses provide qualification and experience opportunities, often featuring direct progression routes into higher education. PLCs help students bridge educational gaps, build confidence, and serve as stepping stones into university degrees.

Studying abroad has become increasingly popular amongst Cork students. Higher education options in the UK, Europe, and beyond can often be more accessible than their Irish equivalents. International study experience adds valuable perspective that employers actively seek.

The charity emphasises that career paths rarely follow straight lines. Journalism degrees lead to public relations careers; marketing qualifications open project management doors; web design backgrounds transition into IT roles. Skills transfer across sectors, and evening courses allow career changes at any stage.

Fiona O'Malley:

"Parents play a huge role in how young people process their results. By staying calm, positive, and encouraging, parents can help their children see the bigger picture. There are always options and opportunities ahead. A set of results doesn't limit your life; it's just one step on your journey."

Turn2Me is providing up to six free professional online counselling sessions and support groups for students and parents feeling overwhelmed during results week. The service aims to help families navigate this potentially stressful period with professional mental health support.
