Tributes paid to Cork educator Don O'Leary who transformed lives of hundreds of young people

Don O'Leary, the former Cork city councillor and educator who dedicated over two decades to supporting vulnerable young people through the Cork Life Centre, has died.

The news was announced today, with tributes highlighting his extraordinary impact on education and youth advocacy in Cork. Mr O'Leary, who received a Lord Mayor's civic award in 2022, was remembered as a compassionate champion for young people who felt left behind by mainstream education systems.

When he took up his role at Cork Life Centre in 2006, there were just six students planning to sit the Junior Certificate. By 2022, that number had grown to 55 students from first year to sixth year, a testament to his vision and dedication.

Using the Servol Life Centre model, Mr O'Leary and his team created an educational environment where young people facing challenges could find belonging, dignity and opportunity. He provided wrap-around services that nurtured self-esteem and self-belief, helping hundreds of students visualise a future for themselves.

Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Fergal Dennehy said:

"Perhaps most importantly, he gave them the keys to their future. He was fearless in his advocacy, often challenging authority with honesty and conviction."

Cllr Dennehy added:

"Those who met and knew him will remember his warmth, humour, and unshakeable belief in the potential of every young person. His legacy will endure not only in the centre he helped create, but in the lives transformed by his dedication."

Cork City Council extended condolences to Mr O'Leary's family and his former colleagues at the Cork Life Centre.

No funeral arrangements have been announced at this time.
