Tragedy in Ballinlough as Woman Dies Following Assault
The scene has been preserved for examination by the Cork City Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit.
Gardaí are investigating a fatal assault in Ballinlough, Cork city, last night.
Emergency services responded to reports of an assault outside a residence at Shrewsbury Downs at approximately 9.15pm on Monday, 17th November.
A woman in her late 50s and a man in his 60s were discovered with critical injuries and were immediately transferred to Cork University Hospital for treatment.
The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. The man remains in a serious but stable condition receiving medical care.
A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene and is currently being detained at a garda station in Cork city under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The scene has been preserved for examination by the Cork City Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit.
A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Anglesea Street Garda Station. A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to support the family of the deceased.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the Shrewsbury Downs area of Ballinlough between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Monday, 17th November, to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in any camera footage, including home security or dash-cam footage from the area during that timeframe.
