Traffic and Airspace Restrictions in Place in Cork for EU Fisheries Ministers Meeting
Gardaí confirm Cork traffic and drone-airspace restrictions until 5pm today for the EU Fisheries Ministers meeting, with drone detection systems deployed at event venues.
An Garda Síochána confirmed a series of localised traffic restrictions across Cork this week to facilitate an informal meeting of EU Fisheries Ministers, taking place on 28 and 29 July 2026.
Localised temporary traffic restrictions and Garda motorcycle rolling road closures to facilitate security escorts were in place on the N27 and R600 between the city centre and Charles Fort on the Old Head of Kinsale during Tuesday afternoon, and in the evening between South Mall and University College Cork.
Further restrictions were in place in the vicinity of Cork City Hall between 7.30am and 8.30am on Wednesday morning.
Temporary Restricted Areas have also been established over Cork City and Kinsale for the duration of the event. According to aviation news outlet FlyingInIreland, the restrictions are active from 8am on Tuesday 28 July until 5pm on Wednesday 29 July, covering airspace from the surface to 3,000 feet and classified as ICAO Class C airspace. Entry is restricted to aircraft authorised by the controlling authority, with State aircraft, Irish Coast Guard aircraft, and HEMS operators on operational missions exempt, and scheduled commercial flights at Cork Airport continuing as normal.
An Garda Síochána said drone detection systems will be deployed at venues hosting the meetings, and any breaches of restricted airspace will be subject to investigation, according to The Echo.
The meeting forms part of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. According to the Irish Presidency's event page, events began on the afternoon of Tuesday 28 July and continue until Wednesday afternoon, 29 July 2026. Attendees arrived at Cork Airport on Tuesday morning and are due to depart on Wednesday evening. Normal operations have continued at the airport throughout.
Formal and informal events are being held at University College Cork, Charles Fort in Old Head of Kinsale, Cork City Hall, and The Imperial Hotel.
Gardaí said traffic restrictions would be kept to a minimum, with any impact on the public intended to be localised. Members of the public were asked to comply with Gardaí on duty in the event of encountering an escort rolling road closure.
