Toxic Plant Warning Issued for Youghal Beach After Hemlock Water Dropwort Found Washed Ashore
Avoid contact, keep children and pets away. Seek medical advice if touched.
Cork County Council is urging the public to stay alert after a highly toxic plant was discovered on a popular East Cork beach.
The plant, known as Hemlock Water Dropwort, was found washed up on The Mall beach in Youghal. While it occurs naturally in Ireland, it is considered highly toxic, and its roots can closely resemble a parsnip, making it particularly dangerous to the unsuspecting.
Cork County Council is advising visitors to avoid touching the plant entirely, as direct contact can cause skin irritation. The public is also being asked to keep children and pets away from any unfamiliar plants found along the shoreline.
The council has extended its appeal to those using beaches across the wider East Cork area, urging people to remain vigilant.
Anyone who believes they may have come into contact with the plant is being encouraged to seek advice from a healthcare professional as a precaution.
Cork County Council has confirmed it will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate steps as needed.
