Nano Nagle Place has launched its Christmas fundraising campaign, Be the Light, as the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Damian Boylan, switched on its Christmas lights and unveiled a new public mural inspired by Nano Nagle’s legacy as the Lady of the Lantern.

Through Be the Light, businesses are invited to sponsor a lantern, while individuals and families are invited to sponsor a light. Every light and lantern sponsored will shine in a unique light installation at Nano Nagle Place on 17 December, with all funds raised supporting the community programmes run there.

The new mural offers a refreshed and striking interpretation of Nano Nagle, widely known as a global education pioneer and social reformer. She dedicated her life to educating children living in poverty at a time when the Penal Laws severely restricted access to schooling.

Created by renowned visual artist FRIZ, the artwork shows Nano holding a book, reflecting her unwavering belief in the power of education to transform lives. It captures both her historical impact and the continued relevance of her vision.

John Smith, Nano Nagle Place CEO:

“Nano Nagle carried her lantern through the lanes of Cork to bring education and hope to people who had been left in the dark. Be the Light asks everyone across Cork and beyond to carry that light forward this Christmas, by supporting programmes that tackle loneliness, build community connection and champion inclusion.

Getting involved is simple. We are asking businesses to sponsor a lantern and individuals to sponsor a light. Every one of them will be lit in a special installation here on 17 December, and we would love every donor to join us that evening to see the light they have helped to create”

Cllr Damian Boylan, Lord Mayor of Cork:

“I am delighted to help turn on the lights here at Nano Nagle Place to mark the start of the festive period, and I would like to commend and congratulate everyone involved in creating this new mural.

Public art like this has the power to transform spaces, spark conversations and inspire. This mural of Nano carrying her light will hopefully be a point of inspiration for others to do the same. Nano Nagle Place is one of Cork’s most important cultural and community landmarks. It also tells the story of one of our city’s most remarkable citizens, whose legacy of compassion, education and service continues to inspire people today.

Christmas is a special time in our city - a season of warmth and generosity, of family and friendship – but it is also a time to remember those who may be facing challenges and to reach out, like Nano did, with kindness and support.”
