SVP Cork Launches Urgent Appeal for 300 Volunteers to Support Families in Need

SVP Cork has issued an urgent appeal for up to 300 new volunteers to help support families and individuals in need across the city. The charity currently has approximately 272 members in Cork city but needs to double this figure to meet the growing demand for their services.

According to Ellmarie Spillane, Member Support co-ordinator for SVP, volunteer numbers were "decimated" by COVID-19 and have struggled to return to pre-pandemic levels. The organisation is now calling on the Cork public to consider offering just 2-3 hours a week to help continue their vital work in the local community.

"Our volunteers are the heart of what we do, they bring not just practical support, but kindness, empathy, and hope into people's homes," said Ms Spillane.

The charity is seeking volunteers for various roles, including data input, basic accounts work and home visitation. Home visitation volunteers provide non-judgmental support, a listening ear and companionship to struggling families, continuing a tradition that has been maintained in Cork city for 180 years.

Volunteers interested in the home visitation role will need to complete an application form, undergo Garda vetting and provide references due to the sensitive nature of the work. Access to private transport is preferable, and full training will be provided by SVP.

The scale of SVP Cork's impact in 2024 highlights the critical need for additional support. The organisation responded to 9,361 requests for help, assisted 19,674 families, delivered 18,660 food hampers and meals, and provided fuel assistance to 5,442 individuals and families. Additionally, SVP Cork supported 6,885 students across all education levels and helped 97 families avoid homelessness.
