Chilled and frozen products have been removed from sale as a precaution at 13 SuperValu stores after a cyber incident affected refrigeration systems, the chain's owner, Musgrave, has confirmed.

According to Musgrave, the incident is limited to a specific model of refrigeration, and all other products remain available as normal.

A Musgrave spokesperson said:

"Our monitoring systems alerted us to the issue and we took immediate action."

"Customer safety is our first priority," the spokesperson said. The company also said products on sale in its stores have been stored at safe temperatures.

Musgrave said its investigation is ongoing and that it is working closely with cybersecurity specialists and the suppliers of the affected refrigeration equipment to resolve the issue and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.

Musgrave's statement did not name the 13 stores or say when their refrigeration systems would be restored. However, The Irish Times understands that stock was impacted at stores in Lucan, Blanchardstown, Waterford and Bray, among other locations.

In October, a cyberattack on refrigeration systems at hundreds of French supermarkets caused food losses and fires. It is not yet known whether the SuperValu incident is connected to that attack, or to refrigeration problems at supermarkets elsewhere in Europe.
