Status Yellow Rain Warning Issued for Cork as Council Activates Flood Response

Cork County Council has activated a Level 1 flood response plan in East Cork as Met Éireann warns of heavy rainfall from Friday morning that could cause surface water flooding and hazardous driving conditions across the county.

The Status Yellow Rain Warning will be in effect from 09:00 on Friday, 14 November until 09:00 on Saturday, 15 November. The alert comes as further spells of heavy rain are expected to fall on already saturated ground, potentially leading to excess surface water and additional flooding.

Cork County Council's Severe Weather Assessment Team met this afternoon to assess the situation. Crews have already inspected known risk locations and will continue to monitor conditions throughout the warning period. Pumping arrangements are now in place at locations prone to flooding.

Motorists should expect poor visibility and hazardous driving conditions during periods of heavy rain. The council advises road users to slow down, increase stopping distances, and watch for surface water and debris on roads.

The public is being urged to stay away from coastal areas during this period of unsettled weather, with wave overtopping possible. People should also avoid swollen rivers, streams and flooded riverbanks, as banks can collapse without warning. Open riverbanks and canal paths should be avoided in flood conditions, where water levels and currents may be far stronger than usual.

Anyone experiencing flooding or road damage should report it to the council's Emergency Out of Hours number at (021) 4800048, or contact their local council office during working hours. For emergencies, the public should call 999 or 112 and request the appropriate service.

In the event of water supply disruptions, Uisce Éireann can be contacted at 1800 278 278.

Cork County Council will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary throughout the warning period.
