Status Yellow Rain Warning for Cork as Very Wet and Windy Conditions Expected Tonight
Very heavy rain and gales expected, risk of localised flooding, drive carefully.
Cork is among seven counties placed under a Status Yellow rain warning as Met Éireann forecasts a very wet night and windy Tuesday, with heavy rain falling on already saturated ground and the risk of localised flooding.
The warning, issued on Sunday morning and valid from 21:00 tonight (Monday 8 December) until 09:00 tomorrow morning, affects Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Tipperary, Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford.
Met Éireann warns that heavy rain falling on saturated ground will bring possible impacts including localised flooding, difficult travel conditions and disruption to outdoor events.
Today's Conditions
Monday will bring a mix of scattered showers and sunny spells, with more persistent cloud building from the south and southwest during the afternoon. Outbreaks of rain will follow into the south this evening.
Highest temperatures will reach 8 to 12 degrees with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, backing southeasterly and easing towards evening.
Very Wet and Windy Night Ahead
Tonight will turn very wet and windy across Cork. Persistent rain will be heavy at times, with southeasterly winds gradually veering southerly and becoming very strong and gusty. Gales are possible on southern coasts.
The night will be relatively mild with lowest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees, increasing through the night.
Tuesday Outlook
Tomorrow will be a very windy day with very strong and gusty southerly winds veering southwesterly. Gales are possible in coastal areas.
Rain will be widespread at first but will become patchier as it clears northwards through the day, with a clearance to scattered showers following from the south later in the afternoon. Temperatures will be mild, reaching 13 to 15 degrees.
Rest of the Week
Met Éireann says there is uncertainty in forecast detail for this week, but there will be spells of wet and windy weather alongside some drier and brighter spells. Temperatures will be average or above for the time of year.
Wednesday is expected to bring a breezy day with a mix of showers and sunny spells. Thursday will see a band of rain moving eastwards across the country, followed by drier conditions. Friday should bring a brighter day for many, though scattered showers will affect Atlantic counties.
Motorists should allow extra time for journeys tonight and tomorrow morning, watch for surface water and be cautious of strong crosswinds, particularly on exposed routes.
