Status Orange Rainfall Warning Issued for Cork

Cork is bracing for a night of heavy rain and possible thundery downpours as Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange rainfall warning for the county, effective from 21:00 on Saturday, 18 October until 05:00 on Sunday, 19 October.

The national meteorological service issued the warning at 16:17 this afternoon, Friday, 17 October, highlighting the potential for dangerous weather conditions that may pose a threat to life and property.

Significant Impacts Expected

Under Status Orange conditions, which are classified as infrequent and dangerous, Cork residents can expect possible river flooding, particularly in mountainous areas across the county. Very difficult travelling conditions are also anticipated during the affected period.

Met Éireann defines Status Orange rainfall warnings as indicating between 30mm and 50mm of rain in six hours or less, 40mm to 60mm in 12 hours or less, or 50mm to 80mm over a 24-hour period. These amounts can reach up to double on windward upper slopes, and impacts vary depending on existing soil moisture levels and recent weather conditions.

Advice for Cork Residents

Authorities advise the public to prepare appropriately depending on their location and planned activities. All people and property in affected areas can be significantly impacted by these conditions. Residents should check their activities and events, delaying or cancelling travel where appropriate.

Those living near rivers or in flood-prone areas, particularly in mountainous regions such as parts of west Cork and the Boggeragh Mountains, should remain vigilant throughout Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, allow extra time for journeys, and consider whether travel is absolutely necessary during the warning period. Surface water and reduced visibility will create hazardous driving conditions on roads across the county.

Cork Safety Alerts will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as conditions develop. Residents can report incidents via the Cork Safety Alerts freephone number, 1800 938 106, or through social media channels.
