Spirit of Samhain Festival Set for Youghal on 30 and 31 October

Youghal is set to host “Spirit of Samhain”, a two-day Halloween festival run by volunteers from Spirit of Youghal Events. Taking place on 30 and 31 October, the event focuses on heritage and culture, blended with modern-day traditions.

On 30 October, “A Tale of Florence Newton” takes place at Barry’s Lane from 7pm to 8.30pm. This immersive story takes audiences back to 1661 and one of Ireland’s most famous witch trials. Florence Newton was accused of bewitching Mary Langdon and causing the death of David Jones, and was imprisoned and tortured at the age of 65. The outcome of the trial is unknown.

Organisers say the event blends historical records with original research and presents new theories on “The Witch of Youghal”, mixing humour with tragedy. It is suitable for all ages.

On 31 October, “Once Upon a Samhain” runs from 12pm to 3pm at Millennium Park. Organisers describe it as a magical, spooky adventure for children and grown-ups alike, and are encouraging families to bring a picnic and their best Samhain costumes. It is suitable for all ages.

Later that evening, the Witches Ritual returns to Mall Beach from 7pm to 8pm. It features local practising witches and acts of remembrance for ancestors.

The Florence Newton Museum of Witchcraft at Youghal Heritage Centre will open from 27 October, ahead of its official unveiling as listed in the festival programme. Visitors can explore the history of witchcraft and the stories of those accused of it.

Organisers will also appear on local radio station CRY104fm on 20 October at 11am to discuss the festival. During the broadcast, they will give the first official play of “A Ballad of Florence Newton”, an original song written and performed by local witches.
