Sod Turned on New Macroom Garda Station to Serve as Cork County Divisional HQ

Construction has officially begun on a new state-of-the-art Garda station in Macroom, Co. Cork, with a sod-turning ceremony held today marking the start of what will become the Divisional Headquarters for the Cork County Garda Division.

The landmark event was attended by Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration Jim O'Callaghan, Minister of State for the Office of Public Works Kevin "Boxer" Moran, and Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly.

The new facility, being delivered under the Garda Capital Investment Plan 2024-2030, will comprise 4,338 square metres of modern accommodation across a two, three and four-storey main building, along with three standalone single-storey ancillary structures and secure parking facilities. The complex will include modern offices, conference facilities, staff support areas and custody suites.

Construction is expected to be completed in Q2 2028.

Minister Jim O'Callaghan said:

"The new station in Macroom represents a major investment in policing, community safety and public infrastructure for the Cork Garda Division. It is central to delivering the government's commitment to build stronger, safer communities by strengthening An Garda Síochána, expanding resources, and modernising facilities to tackle crime."

The Minister confirmed that €364 million has been ring-fenced for new Garda buildings as part of a broader €2.18 billion allocation secured through the National Development Plan for Justice sector capital projects from 2026 to 2030, an increase of over €800 million on the previous plan.

Minister Kevin "Boxer" Moran said:

"This project showcases the close collaboration between the OPW, An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice, highlighting their unified approach to delivering major capital projects. It is an example of Government's commitment to delivering modern work environments with the capacity to meet future demands."

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly said:

"This development reflects a significant capital investment in policing infrastructure and will provide Garda personnel with modern, fit-for-purpose facilities to support the delivery of a responsive, community-focused policing service across Macroom and the wider County Cork area."

The Macroom development is one of several projects being progressed nationally under the Garda Capital Investment Programme, developed following detailed engagement between An Garda Síochána, the OPW and the Department of Justice.
