Smyths Toys Recalls Dig Products Over Asbestos Concerns
Smyths Toys is recalling several Dig products over concerns the sand may contain asbestos. Stop use immediately.
Smyths Toys is recalling a range of Dig products after it was found that the sand in the products may contain asbestos, a substance banned across the EU due to the risk it poses to health.
The recall, announced on 24 March 2026, covers the following products:
- Dino Dig Sensory Bin (248772),
- Gold Dig Kit (231105),
- 10pcs Dig It Out Dinosaur Eggs (166403),
- Gem Dig Kit 12 Gem Pack (187539),
- Dig It Up Pirates 13 Treasure Set (223521),
- Pocket Play Gold Treasure Chest Dig It (242645),
- Gem Dig Kit 8 Pack (187538).

All affected products were sold in Smyths Toys stores. The CCPC is continuing to engage with the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and has advised that further updates will be provided as soon as additional information becomes available.
Consumers who have any of the products at home are advised to stop using them immediately.
If the sand is still packaged, it should be placed in a heavy-duty plastic bag, sealed securely, clearly labelled, and stored in a secure location out of reach of children. If the sand has already been used, any areas where it was used should be cleaned using wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Gloves and a protective FFP2 face mask or equivalent should be worn. The sand, gloves, mask, and cloths should then be double-bagged, sealed securely, and clearly labelled. In both cases, consumers should contact their local authority for advice on collection and disposal, and the product should be stored in a secure location out of reach of children in the meantime.
Children and other people should be kept away from areas where the sand has been used until the area has been fully cleaned.
Prior to disposal, consumers should contact Smyths Toys to request a refund. Customers can call Smyths Toys customer service on 091 355 000 or email cshelpdesk@smythstoys.com.
